I began drawing Yooper related cartoons at the urging on my editor Bob Skuggen who asked me to come up with a title for an outdoors related single panel gag cartoon I offered the Daily Mining Gazette. We titled the panel Yooper Doopers which I later re-named to Yooper Bloopers after the popular TV show 'Bloopers and Blunders" or some similar title (it just personally sounded more appropriate)....I can't recall, it's been so long ago. But the cartoon gained a small following which caused people to start using the term 'Yooper', which eventually began to get applied in news stories about local people involved in various news articles and local interest stories. Eventually some of those stories were picked up or mentioned on a radio station and then on a regional TV station and it didn't take long for the term to catch on and became a well-known catch phrase that eventually was entered into the lexicon of Americana....and finally Merriam-Webster's Dictionary listed it as an official word.
