This store celebrates the little taught but well known history of the final emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in June of 1865 after enslaved Black Americans finally received news of their freedom two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed.
