TROOPER THE CAT
On February 11, 2012, a cat was found frozen to a driveway in Stephenville, NL, and the local Society For The Care and Protection of Animals (SCAPA) was alerted. Rescuers -- Gwen and Delores Samms -- estimate he spent at least 18 hours clinging to life with his backside frozen solid to the ground. Using buckets of warm water, they freed the animal and rushed him to a clinic. When the Vet took his temperature, he was so cold that nothing registered. Wrapped in her coat for extra warmth, Delores held the little body close to her own and willed him to live. Initial and subsequent assessments determined that "Trooper" had three (3) pelvic fractures and possible nerve damage. He was flown to the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of PEI where his hind leg and tail had to be amputated.
What happened to him? No one seems to know. He may have been hit by a vehicle or perhaps was taking shelter under the hood of a car when the engine was started. But one thing is for certain: this once unfortunate feline has crept into the hearts of people around the world, including the Canadian Juno award-winning rock band, Trooper, who sent a care package which included a pint-sized t-shirt imprinted with the name of their hit song, "Raise A Little Hell" (See it here: http://www.zazzle.com/scapazazz/gifts?gp=105037153803452939).
When the band visited Newfoundland in the summer of 2012, "Trooper The Cat" and his entourage were driven by limousine to the concert where they had a backstage pass to meet and hang out with the guys. Trooper was quite enamored with their little three-legged namesake.
Gwen says the inspiration for his name is obvious. "He should have been dead. This cat had the will to live, so we were definitely not going to give up on him. The help and love from supporters around the world has really restored my faith in humanity."
Trooper's Facebook Group -- Troopers For Trooper -- has thousands of members who provide a constant stream of love and support. https://www.facebook.com/groups/356116137742094/
So where is he now?
"Trooper" is doing well in his new home with Momma Delores and his treatment for bladder control is ongoing. He lives a pampered life of leisure and never has to worry about being wet and cold again!
When you think of "Trooper The Cat" and other miracle rescue stories, you can truly say . . . look what love did!
