Acerca de

I've long been interested in art—especially photography, text-based art & multimedia, from first viewing Rauschenberg's combine paintings, and Jenny Holzer's work, as a young adult, which was the first time I realized people could make art with whatever media they chose. In the late 1990s I collaborated with my friend Erick Gordon, providing text for a series of paintings he showed at the Macy Gallery in New York City. In recent years, after visiting my friend Raina's house in the Hudson Valley, and admiring her giant wood-block print by Anthony Burrill, it encouraged me to produce something of my own. I like the idea of people giving themselves permission to create whatever it is that interests them. For 15 years I worked as a production artist and graphic designer, and am now a freelance writer. My writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Slate, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Green Mountains Review, the Paris Review, Ploughshares, the Poetry Foundation, and elsewhere. I'm a native of NC, lived in lower Manhattan for 16 years, and now divide my time between Cambridge, MA, and Beacon, NY. My first book, LOOKING FOR ANDY GRIFFITH, will be published next year by UNC Press.
