By day I am an engineer in the aerospace industry. I am working to send the first woman and next man to the moon and then on to mars. I am part of a team of folks all across America who are developing the Orion Space Capsule. My engineering eye influences my imagery through my love of details, structure and lines.
You can see my attentiveness to the architecture and micro-details in the environments that I photograph. In many ways my art is my antithesis to my job. My art is my creative outlet from a very structured and process-oriented work. I tend to wander and capture as things catch my attention. My work is more methodical, with documented frameworks and processes. I need both to be whole.
I have a reverence for nature and a love of travel. My activities include skiing, hiking, boating, cruising and international and domestic travel, all of which inspire my choice of subjects. A few years ago, I was finally diagnosed with a genetic-based immune disorder called Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID). I have battled illness since infancy as my body doesn't make antibodies on its own. I take an infusion of antibodies from plasma donations every few weeks to stay healthy (thank you plasma donors!)
My life-long struggle with chronic illness and my struggle to live a normal and active life has influenced the way I approach every photograph – with an eye of compassion and an interest to tell the story behind the subject. To me, art is healing.
My goal is to capture the light of the world one location at a time. My detailed prints of the developmental properties of light and color in the locations, people, elements and cultures I depict are the essence of how I see life.
