It was after the loss of our 5-year old hen Connie to cancer that I realized the gap in support for those who lose a chicken. There are ways in our culture to express sympathy for the death of a dog, cat or horse. But if it’s “just a chicken” that you’ve lost, you’re supposed to get over it right away, with nothing to acknowledge the life of your feathered friend. People who keep chickens get close to their birds. We get to know the relationships, friendships and intrigues of the flock, and the individual personalities of each hen. Our hens give us joy, and they also give us breakfast. The whole dynamic of the flock changes when you lose a chicken. Chickens are pets too, and they hold a special place in our hearts. I created Connie’s Cards in honor of our girl, and for hens everywhere who have gone on to the big coop in the sky.
