Independence Day, also known as Fourth of July or July Fourth in the United States, is a federal holiday that commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress. This historic document officially declared (hence the name) that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. Many don't realize that it wasn't JUST colonists that fought the British to win American independence -- nor was it JUST the British that fought to thwart the effort. Colonists, ironically, were joined by blacks -- freed and slaves alike -- as were the British. Native American Indians also fought on both sides. Colonial America was further joined, in its effort to secure independence, by the French and Spanish while Germans joined the British ranks. It was only following a resounding defeat in Yorktown that the British Parliament, in 1782, voted to end offensive operations in the newly established United States of America. The designs offered in this store pay homage to those feisty settlers AND the allies that were decisive factors in the establishment of our America -- and the reason we celebrate this holiday.
