Pieta

The Pietà is a subject in Christian art that depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus Christ after his descent from the cross. It is most often found in sculpture. The Pietà was a popular subject among northern European artists. Michelangelo created a sculpture called the Pietà that depicts the dead body of Jesus draped across the Virgin Mary's lap as she looks down upon his body in grief. Michelangelo was deeply religious and the Pietà is an expressive piece that was clearly inspired by his deep and abiding faith.
