Ogre

The ground gave before the ogre did. A huge body came out of the old tale, heavy step, a shadow wide enough to cover the path. No one asked it to speak. The size was the whole story. People edged past carrying an ogre gift that sat in the shoulders, the weight of that passing. It comes back in ogre playing cards that feel thick in the hand, in an ogre notebook whose page looks small under the drawing of that body, in an ogre postcard of the wide shadow and the slow step. The path clears. The shadow does not.
