Gargoyle

Stone watched the street before the person did. A gargoyle crouched on the ledge, wings folded, rain in the carved mouth, the old guardian of the roof. People passing felt the look and did not wave. They went in carrying a gargoyle gift of being seen from above. It shows again in gargoyle playing cards that sit heavier than the rest, in a gargoyle notebook opened under a window, in a gargoyle postcard of the wet stone and the folded wing. The street empties. The watch does not.
