Text reads: The Growth of our National Flag ~ 1885. 1.COLONIAL FLAG Used chiefly by colonies of New England, previous to the Revolutionary War. 2.BUNKER HILL FLAG Used by New England troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill. 3.PINE TREE FLAG OF THE NAVY ~ 'AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN' Used by the American ships early in the Revolutionary War. 4.RATTLESNAKE FLAG ~ 'DON'T TREAD ON ME'' Used early in the Revolutionary War. 5.FIRST NATIONAL FLAG Used in 1776 before the Declaration of Independence. The 13 stripes represented the 13 colonies. 6.THE PRESENT ~ 'STAR SPANGLED BANNER' The stripes signify the original 13 colonies; and the stars, the present number of States. This wonderful vintage poster, created from a vintage illustration (1885) has been beautifully enhanced and restored to its former brilliance by the artists at The Vintage Factory.
