The "Resurrection of Christ" is a masterpiece in and of itself even though it is one tenth of the massive multi-layered Isenheim Altarpiece in Colmar, Germany painted by Matthias Grunewald. From the reality of drunken Roman strongmen and heavy stone coffin lids, Christ surges upward strong, beauitful and free of all earthly realities of his own. As he returns to being part of the triune Godhead the contours of His face fluctuate. His features haze over, His hair dissolves into melting gold. The light spreads out in immense curves ranging from bright yellow to purple, and finally shading off into a pale blue which in turn merges with the dark blue of the night. In clothing Christ Grunewald has rendered the changing colours of the fabrics as they become part of Christ. The scarlet robe turns a bright yellow, the closer it gets to the light source of the head. The material grows lighter; diaphanous; and makes the transition from earthly to spiritual in a river of gold. Likewise, the white shroud rises taking on a lilac tint, becomes pure violet, and finally, merges into the black of night. We witness the transfigured Godhead ablaze with life. We witness the formation of the glorified body escaping from its carnal shell. We throw out the story-book stuff. We turn the corner, understanding that we are witness to the tangible emergence of the Godhead itself.
