Sano di Pietro

Designs inspired by two of my favorite paintings by Sano di Pietro (1405-1481), an Italian painter of the Sienese school. First, a beautiful annunciation angel. Sano di Pietro's archangel Gabriel is ethereal, but there is also an innocent quality about him. Appearing so childlike and trusting it is not hard to trust him back. My second choice is a madonna an child painting that I find both touching and emotionally satifsfying. Especially the expression of the child, when he reaches out to comfort his mother (who is contemplating his coming suffering). This is actually a type of icon in the Byzantine tradition, called The glykophilousa, or The loving kindness.
