Saint Elijah the Prophet
Elijah & the Angel (Elijah and the Angel by Godfrey Kneller (17th Century) The Prophet, who had been driven into the desert by Jezebel, was about to die from hunger and thirst, when an angel appeared to him bringing sustenance. (1 Kings 19:7-18 KJV) All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. Elijah's name means “Yahweh is my God”.
Elijah was sent to show Israel the evil of their ways and encourage them to return to the Lord. He confronted idolatry, performed miracles, spoke God's judgment, and changed his world.
Elijah was the last of the prophets in old Israel who held a fullness of divine authority. He sealed the heavens shut so that it did not rain when a famine came in the land. Recognizing his extraordinary holiness and faithfulness to God. Even though he lived before the Incarnation of Jesus Christ.
