ROME, ITALY - Piazza Del Colosseo, 1
ABOUT THE COLOSSEUM
We started down Cavour Street, taking the long way to the Big House, wondering across Via Nicola and spilling out onto Piazza del Colosseo. Swarms of transit riders, taxies, and underground transportation carriers, all seem to merge and come together in this one spot.
I looked over at this outdoor café, basking in the shadow of the Colosseum. I contemplated if they had a decent plate of food to offer, but with this ambiance, I would have chewed on piece of cardboard to have a seat this close to the Big House.
Open in 2010, this relatively new attraction, had my curiosity. I read about the dark stone tunnels in which gladiators prepared to do battle in the Colosseum, were now opened to the public for the first time. I had to experience it. The idea of sitting in an airplane seat for hours to get here and leaving without going underground wasn’t going to happen on my shift.
It’s true, archeologists are concerned about the impact that millions of travelers will have on this clandestine maze of passageways and corridors. People want to experience their very own Gladiator moment, and visualize the animal cages filled with screaming wild animals as they walk down these underground corridors leading to the to the center of the Colosseum.
As we walked down this underground passageway, nearby gladiator barracks known as, the "Ludus Magnus", were still visible and sent a chill across my brain. The Gladiators, who were mostly common criminals, slaves and prisoners of war, would emerge into the arena from the spot where we were standing.
If it’s been more than ten years since you last visited Rome, put this tour on the top of your list. It’s estimated that countless hundreds of thousands perished within the arena’s walls from 80 AD to Medieval times, and all of them walked the same path you will experience on this tour.
One interesting thing I noticed were the people around me. We started out as strangers, coming together on this tour, starting from across the street, then laughing, talking, filming and goofing around. Suddenly, the laughter stopped, the conversation minimized and this underground trek took on a life of its own.
