Poppy Day (Memorial Day)

Remembrance of those whose lives were sacrificed in the service of their country. Red poppies recall the fields in Flanders where so many were buried after the battles of WWI. But a day of remembrance goes back to the Civil War era, when the ladies of the south placed flowers on the graves of the fallen, both Confederate and Union. It has become a custom in the USA to gather for a family reunion at the cemetery or a nearby park, decorate the graves, and enjoy a picnic to start the summer fun.
