MacLean/MacLain Clan's Duart Castle, Scotland

The historic seat of the clan is located on the Isle of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland in the "Inner Hebrides". Situated on a high crag, Duart Castle has guarded the Sound of Mull since the 13th century. It is constructed with a strong curtain wall and a substantial tower or keep that was added about 1390. The walls of the keep are 10-feet thick on the landward side and “only” 5-9 feet thick seaward. The castle was abandoned following the Jacobite uprising in 1745 and fell into disrepair. It was acquired in 1911 by the clan’s chief, Sir Fitzroy Maclean, 10th Baronet, who restored it. Duart remains in Maclean ownership and is open to the public varying hours April through mid-October. The Maclean clan is one of the oldest in the Highlands and at its height owned vast tracts of land in Argyll and the Inner Hebrides. Like most of the powerful clans, the Maclean clan grew to numerous branches and a number of castles have been associated with the clan over the centuries.
