First Magnolia

This first blossom on our magnolia tree was so perfect that I couldn't resist painting it. The majority of the paint for the blossom itself was applied using an impasto technique, which incorporates the use of a palette knife. The leaves and background were done with a brush. Understated tones of peach and blue gently remind the viewer that nothing in nature is truly all one color. The white of the petals is enhanced by the subtle undertones, while shadows from the magnolia tree of which it is a part gently play across the petals. This work could easily fall in either the traditional or the impressionist genre, although it would also fit beautifully with other motifs, blending with modern styles as well. Lovely in a living room, bedroom, dining room - truthfully, gorgeous in any room of the house. Also a lovely addition to any business decor. The tranquility of the piece makes it more than suitable for a waiting room, since it does seem to have a serene and calming effect on viewers.
