Donald/MacDonald Clan Armadale Castle Scotland

McDonalds around the world can enjoy unique gifts that celebrate their ancient Scottish heritage and its history on the Isle of Skye in western Scotland. Armadale Castle, spiritual home of Clan Donald/MacDonald, is located in the southern section of the Isle of Skye. The ruined Gothic castle shown here is not the original Armadale Castle. However, it is more picturesque than the two-story white section which attaches to the right, but not shown in this photo. The older section dates from 1790, but wasn't the original either. Clan Donald/MacDonald lays claim to being the largest and most powerful of the Scottish Highland Clans. The chief of Clan Donald was known as the Lord of the Isles, and Armadale was just one of several homes associated with the various clan branches over the centuries. The older 1790 section houses the Museum of the Isles and is located on the Sleat Peninsula in south Skye, Scotland, quite near the ferry. The museum focuses on the history of Scotland's Isles, Clan Donald and Highland genealogy. The original Armadale Castle was destroyed in 1650, when the government attempted to force Sir Donald MacDonald of Sleat to submit to the new government. More than a century later, it was rebuilt.
