Gautama Buddha, whose followers are Buddhists, hold that Buddha was an enlightened being, one who has awakened from the sleep of ignorance and achieved freedom from suffering. He reminds us through this teaching that to avoid suffering for ourselves and others we can instead choose to be a light unto this world.
